In 2007, Riverhill Farm began to offer customers annual seasonal subscriptions in what has come to be referred to in shorthand as "CSA", or Community Supported Agriculture. There are many aspects to Community Supported Agriculture, but offering subscriptions or shares for weekly produce boxes has grown in popularity across the US as a measure to help sustain local, small family farms.
In a nutshell, Riverhill Farm's CSA provides the consumer with fresh-picked, organic and locally grown produce and the subscriber directly supports the farm by providing the farm with a predictable income. The subscriber benefits by intimate knowledge of their food source and through a connection to the natural cycles of our local environment. The subscriber and the community as a whole benefit by keeping land in agriculture in our community, and by supporting a local economy. We at Riverhill Farm benefit directly by receiving income early in the season to support our production costs and by knowing the people who are directly involved with the economic viability of the farm. Ideally, participation fosters community in the biggest sense of the term for all involved.
Joining Riverhill Farm as a subscriber will provide you with a weekly box of seasonal vegetables, starting in the early season with peas, strawberries, greens, lettuce and salad mix, potatoes, onions, garlic and more, and quickly including other main crop and specialty vegetables-corn, tomatoes, peppers, beans, culinary herbs, eggplant, summer and winter squash, melons and watermelons and more through the end of the season.
When you subscribe, you will fill out our internet-based subscription form and choose one of three days for pickup of your produce box at the farm. Pickup is typically in the afternoon from noon to 6 p.m., and is available on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. A share is $25.00 weekly. For a typical season starting in mid-June (or earlier, weather permitting) and continuing through the end of September, that's fifteen weeks for a season total of $375.00.
A single person may find that they cannot consume as much produce as we provide each week. We do not offer half-shares, but encourage those who may be interested to split their share with a friend or neighbor. Some subscribers do this by splitting up the produce in each week's box; some do it by alternating weeks. If you are interested in splitting your share but cannot find someone to split it with, let us know and we may be able to pair you with someone.
Sending in your deposit of half the season total ($187.50) reserves your subscription for the coming season. The balance of your payment is due on the first day you have selected to pick up your box. There will be a limited number of shares available this season, so send in your check promptly to reserve your share. Until we receive your check, we cannot guarantee you a share.
We do not typically pre-pack your box. Since you are coming to the farm for pickup, we are able to offer a maximum of flexibility as far as what you choose to put in your box from the selection available that day. There may be limits on a given day for the quantity of an individual vegetable which you will receive, but we endeavor whenever possible to allow you to tailor your selection to your needs and preferences. Packing your box while you are at the farm also allows for the greatest freshness and best condition of your produce. |
